Przebudzeni. Ruiny antyku i narodziny włoskiego renesansu

Włoskie quattrocento stanowiło przełom w sztuce europejskiej i zapoczątkowało nowatorskie trendy na całym kontynencie na następne dwa stulecia. Powstał odmienny sposób malowania, wyraźnie widać inne podejście do ludzkiego ciała, nagle odkryto perspektywę, a prekursorscy twórcy zaczęli pokazywać, w prawdzie ostrożnie i z zastrzeżeniami, osobowość przedstawianych postaci. Inspiracją był dorobek starożytności – przede wszystkim czerpali z wiedzy zawartej w pracach wielkich myślicieli i artystów, następnie ze sztuki Aten i Rzymu oraz z żywej tradycji historycznej, na koniec zaś z mitów i legend trwających niezmiennie w czasach późnego średniowiecza. Wielki proces powstawania nowej świadomości, a w efekcie nowej cywilizacji europejskiej jest rzeczywistym tematem naszej wystawy. […]

Fascynacja wspaniałym dorobkiem Aten i Rzymu trwa po dziś dzień, ale nieczęsto możemy obserwować proces odkrywania i – w rzeczy samej – odsłaniania znakomitych dokonań starożytności. Poszukiwanie wzorów, nowatorskie łączenie odkrytych inspiracji z kanonami twórczości stosunkowo niedawno powstałymi stanowiło owoc pracy setek doskonałych rzemieślników i całej rzeszy wielkich mistrzów, prawdziwych geniuszy, którym tą wystawą składamy hołd. Jednocześnie ekspozycja o narodzinach renesansu jest kolejnym ważnym etapem budowania reprezentatywnego zbioru sztuki włoskiej z XIV i XV w. – prof. dr hab. Wojciech Fałkowski

The Italian Quattrocento constituted a breakthrough in European art and was the beginning of novel trends on the entire continent for the next two hundred years. A distinct painting technique emerges, a different approach to the human body is clearly visible, suddenly, perspective is discovered, and groundbreaking artists cautiously begun to show the personality in portrayed figures. The works of antiquity were their inspiration – they especially drew from the knowledge incorporated in the works of great thinkers and artists, art of Athens and Rome, living historical tradition, and lastly myths and legends perservering unchangingly in the late Middle Ages. The grand process of the rise of a new consciousness, and in effect a new European civilisation, is the true topic of our exhibition. [...]

Fascination with the great achievements of Athens and Rome is present until today, but it is not often that we can observe the process of discovery and unveiling of the accomplishments of antiquity. Searching for patterns, innovative connecting of the discovered inspirations to relatively new canons was the fruit of the labour of hundreds of excellent artisans and a whole lot of great masters, real geniuses, who are all celebrated with this exhibition. At the same time, an exposition about the birth of the Renaissance is an important step in builiding a representative collection of Italian 14th and 15th century art. – prof. dr hab.
